Course Overview

This one day session will provide evidence based advise and understanding regarding infection control and prevention. This will be tailored specifically for both clinical and non-clinical staff working across primary and community care settings. Participants will be able to develop an understanding of micro-organisms, and how they cause disease, as well as identifying their individual role in relation to preventing infections within this unique setting.

Understanding microorganisms

How microbes cause disease

Identification of the immune system and how the body protects itself

Understanding the microbiology of bacteria and their differentiation

Healthcare Acquired Infection

Infection prevention and infection control measures - how we can protect our patients/clients

Increased incidence of infection and outbreak management

Management of exposure to blood bourne infections

Safe handling of specimens

Demonstration of good practice guidelines (NICE guidelines), national initiatives


Course Aims and Outcomes

For the student to develop an understanding of microbiology and the underlying principles of infection prevention and control

This will be achieved by:

  • Understanding micro-organisms and how they can cause disease
  • How the body protects itself
  • Understanding health care acquired infection
  • Overarching principles of infection prevention and control measures
  • Management of increased incidence and outbreak of infection
